What Gaming Monitor Should You Buy and What to Consider When Buying One
Although not covered in this report, one important factor in any gaming experience is your computer’s graphics card, often referred to as a GPU (graphics processing unit). Simply put, if you don’t have a quality GPU, you’re not going to have an optimal gaming experience.
Once you’ve got a high-performance GPU, the next thing to consider is the monitor. While it’s common for people to upgrade their operating systems, peripherals, and even GPUs, it’s pretty common to use the same monitor for a few years, so selecting the right one is an important investment to get right.Monitors have certain benchmarks that include the aspect ratio, screen size, refresh rate, the resolution, pixel pitch, response time, contrast ratio, and input delay.
Aspect ratio –
Simply put, this refers to the width of the monitor divided by its height. Most monitors today have an aspect ratio of 16:9 (similar to Hollywood films) which means that the monitor is approximately two (1.8) times wider than it is high. Some games, however, are ideally suited for a standard of 21:9. Monitors with a 21:9 aspect ratio are usually bigger than 27 inches and are often called ultra-wide to distinguish them from “normal” monitors with a 16:9 ratio. While ultra-wide monitors offer a more comprehensive visual experience, it’s important to remember that they have a greater number of total pixels on the screen and thus require more powerful GPUs.
Screen size –
This is probably the easiest standard to understand because it refers to the physical size of the monitor’s screen, usually measured in inches. It’s important to remember though that a 27-inch monitor is not 27 inches wide but 27 inches from one corner to another corner (diagonally).
Refresh rate –
The way any monitor creates the illusion of movement on a screen is to constantly “redraw” each pixel starting from the upper left-hand corner and continuing across to the right-hand side before moving down to the next row, continuing until it reaches the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. The speed at which it “draws” the image on the screen is known as the refresh time or rate, usually described in Hertz (Hz). One hertz means one cycle per second, so 60 Hz means the screen image is re-drawn 60 times per second.
Resolution refers to the number of pixels (abbreviated to “p”) per square inch. Monitors often have multiple resolution settings but the technical description will list its highest possible resolution. Some of the biggest gaming monitors have a resolution of 3440x1440p meaning 3440 pixels horizontally and 1440 pixels vertically for a square inch. Right now, the highest possible pixel resolution is 3840x2160p (for 16:9 monitors), usually referred to as “4K for short. In televisions, 4K is sometimes referred to as UHD (ultra-high definition). Nonetheless, some manufacturers are now pushing the envelope with 8K technology, referred to as FUHD (full ultra-high definition) although these are not yet widely available.
Pixel pitch –
Each individual pinpoint of light that can be controlled on your screen is a pixel. The pixel pitch refers to the distance from one pixel to the next, measured in millimeters. Lower pixel pitches (4-6) are ideal for when you’re sitting close to the screen while much higher pixel pitches (20 or more) are better suited for large screens designed for outdoor use.
Response time –
This refers to the lag (delay) between when the computer sends the command to draw an image and the monitor responding, usually measured in milliseconds (ms). The response time is often called “gray to gray” as the benchmark refers to how long it takes to change one pixel from a shade of gray to another shade of gray.
Contrast ratio –
This refers to the difference between the brightest possible color (white) and the darkest possible color (black). There is no official standard for measuring contrast ratio.
Input delay –
The input delay is different than the response time (above) because it refers to how long it takes between when the user does something (presses a key or makes a mouse click) and for the result to show up on the screen. A number of factors can affect input delay, including using wireless (as opposed to wired) peripherals, the processor of the computer, and even the network (for online games). Input delay is usually referred to in milliseconds.
A few more terms that are important to understand include: G-sync, Free-Sync, and V-Sync.
Computer games are constantly sending new imaging information to the monitor, generally referred to as “fps” or frames per second. One “frame” is one static image and the game can dynamically change how many frames it is creating. A problem arises when the the GPUs refresh rate and the monitor’s refresh rate are mismatched. The GPU often has a dynamic refresh rate whereas the monitor has a constant refresh rate. When these two collide, it results in something called screen tear that looks as if the image on the screen is smeared, jagged, or not smooth.
To solve the mismatch issue, several techniques were invented.
This is the simplest workaround as it puts an upper limit on the number of screen draws coming from the GPU in order to make sure the monitor always has a full image to draw. For example, if the GPU is pumping out data at 120 Hz but the monitor can only handle 60 Hz, V-Synch will cap the GPU to 60 Hz by skipping every other re-draw command, effectively throttling the GPU down to 60 Hz. Unfortunately, this means that if the GPU refresh rate runs lower than the monitor’s, say if the GPU is putting out new images 30 times a second (30 Hz) while the monitor is at 60 Hz, the monitor will show the same image twice, resulting in what looks like jerky motion (often called “stuttering”).
This is no longer considered acceptable for professional gaming experiences. To try and prevent mismatches on the fly (the GPU being either over or under the monitor’s refresh rate), adaptive synch technologies were created.
This is a trademark of the Nvidia corporation so any monitor stating that it has G-Synch is using Nvdia’s technology. G-Sync works by using a special chip (built into the monitor) that coordinates the information coming in from the GPU and matches it to the monitor’s capabilities. Because all the work is done via the chip inside the monitor itself, a G-Sync monitor can work with older GPU models.
Free-Sync was invented by AMD and works very similarly to G-Sync. But instead of using a special chip inside the monitor itself, Free-Sync works by using a display controller inside the GPU to regulate and coordinate any mismatches between the refresh rate of the GPU and monitor. Gamers often dispute whether Free-Sync works as well as G-Sync but expect to pay a premium for the licensed technology involved with G-Sync. Because Free-Sync relies on the GPU doing the work of coordinating the output, Free-Sync monitors only work with GPU chips with the integrated display controller.
It’s also important to understand the difference between TN and IPS panels. Gaming monitors haven’t been using tubes for more than a decade so all of them rely on a panel of LCDs. How these LCDs are controlled determines what kind of visual image you’ll get on the monitor’s screen.
TN stands for “twisted nematic” and is the most common type of monitor. Generally speaking, TN panels have a higher refresh rate but have less depth when it comes to displaying colors accurately and in great detail. Also, because of the way the LEDs are controlled, the image will lose sharpness if not viewed directly head on.
IPS refers to “in-plane switching” and results in better viewing angles (the image looks clear from the side) and better details in color depth. But because this greater amount of pixel control takes more work, refresh rates on IPS panels are slower. Despite the difference in speed, IPS panels are used in some very good gaming monitors.
There are also other technologies for controlling LEDs, including VA (Vertical Alignment), PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) and Samsung’s proprietary version of IPS. Most gaming monitors, however, will use either TN or IPS panels.
What Specs You Should Look for When Buying a Gaming Monitor
Besides your budget, the first thing to consider when shopping for a gaming monitor is to understand what kind of games you plan on playing the most. Some games like racing games or FPS (first person shooter) games have a lot of constantly-changing action on the screen that requires rapid re-drawing and low delays in order for the player to react as fast as possible to what’s on the screen. Other games like RPG (role-playing games) games are more visually rich, featuring cut scenes and a slower pace of play that will do better with monitors that can display complex images very well.
The three most important factors to consider when choosing the resolution, size, and the monitor’s ability to faithfully produce colors.
As discussed above, 4K is the gold standard for now although 8K monitors are expected to be on the market soon.
You’ll want a minimum of 21 inches although many gamers prefer larger screens, including monitors that use either curved screens or are called “widescreen”. Be sure to pick the right screen ratio for the games you play, usually either 16:9 or 21:9.
IPS panels have the highest fidelity in terms of color reproduction. If seeing every detail of the art in the game is essential to you, choose an IPS panel. Better to spend more money on panel type (IPS) than a bigger screen. Consider a 21-inch monitor with an IPS panel. Although your screen may be smaller, the image will be better. Usually you can get a 21″ IPS panel monitor for under $300.
Stick with an IPS panel and go for a slightly bigger size (24-27 inches) with shorter response times. These run about $400-800.
Expect to pay over $1000 for a monitor that has the best specs for the very best gaming experience possible.
